I have been an artist and world traveler all my life. I was born in Boston, Massachusetts to immigrant parents – mother from France and father from Holland. When we were children, my mother took my sister and me on adventures backpacking around Europe several summers in a row, finishing off the trips at our family’s beach house in Brittany, France. In fifth grade, I left Boston’s inner city and moved to the island of Martha’s Vineyard, where I was surrounded by the beauty of the sea and the comfort of small-community, island living.
Before getting a degree in Fine Art from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst I took a year to travel the world equipped with a sketchbook, journal, camera and backpack. At the age of eighteen, I spent two months backpacking around Europe, a month living with a family in Mexico while taking intensive Spanish classes, and a month on safari in East Africa. I went on to study abroad in London and then Italy; to be an art teach in India and to start my career as a graphic designer in Sydney, Australia. I had traveled to 30 countries by the time I turned 30. When I decided it was time to settle down, it should come as no surprise that when I met a man on a plane who had recently returned from a trip around the world… I walked off the flight and announced to my friend “that was my future husband!”
That was exactly 15 years ago. Since then, I and the man from the plane got married, settled in Golden, Colorado and now have two beautiful daughters. Over the past 15 years, I made a career for myself as a successful web and graphic designer, photographer and art director – six years freelancing and six years after that as Denver Zoo’s Design & Interactive Manager/Photographer. In my free time, I made large artistic world maps. I found that making art became sacred time for me and making maps kept me in touch with the vagabond that I once was.
In 2017, all the signs pointed to me quitting my job to become a professional artist, to be more present as a mother and wife and to start traveling the world again… this time with my family!
